This is not another health article to confuse you or tell you what to do. I hope to clarify what health is…
I am a Health, Wellness and Nutrition Coach. My aim is to empower my client to find a solution to their health problem by working together.
I spend some time in Den Haag in Holland every few months and when out grocery shopping, I look around and do not see many overweight people in fact maybe only one or two. When in South Africa recently I noticed a sharp contrast in that there were many overweight individuals.
Unfortunately, in the UK and Europe the cases of obesity are fast catching up to the USA. Immigrating to a new country is stressful, lifestyle and attitudes are very different and even food and food choices are different. Even more important then, is to focus on healthy eating, the correct activity for the season that we are in and supplementing as we do not get the same amount of sunshine in the UK that we did back home.
Definition of Health
When asked the question “What is Health? “ what would be your answer?
Here are what some people have replied when asked the same question:
“Living healthily” (again what/how is that?). “Being happy, eating correctly, be active, exercise, meditate, be joyful, be happy and content, free of illness, not be on medication, no stress, not overweight, getting enough sleep, no chronic disease”. No right or wrong answer!
We need to look at all aspects and unfortunately that is not what most people do.
They look at eating healthily and exercise. Are we getting all the nutrients we need from our foods today? In just one study it was found that the nutrient value in broccoli had decreased by 68% in the last ten years. Farming practices, pesticides, transportation of food, cooking methods all resulting in a decrease of anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals etc in our foods. On the other hand, we have increasing exposure to free radicals, stress, pollution, bad eating habits, not enough sleep and yes, exercise.
Today it seems to be just about treating symptoms and disease whilst the body is capable of healing itself. People are becoming more unfit and there is an increase of chronic disease and obesity at younger ages.
World Health Organisation
“Health” as defined by the World Health Organisation:
“The state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is a dynamic condition resulting from the bodies constant adjustment and adaption in response to stress and changes in the environment for maintain an inner equilibrium called homeostasis”
Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy, fulfilling and more productive lifestyle. It is a dynamic process of change and growth, a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Holistic Health is a system of preventive care that considers the whole individual, one’s own responsibility for one’s wellbeing and the total influences social, psychological and environmental that affect health including nutrition, exercise and mental relaxation.
Hope this encourages you to think about your own health and give you an insight about what you would need to do. Will talk more about the nutritional and supplement side next time.
Growing up in South Africa I always wanted to be a nurse and started my training at Groote Schuur Hospital and Carinus College in 1971, in Cape Town.
Unfortunately I always felt something was missing, many years later realised that I was in the illness industry and not the health industry.
I married my husband Fred in 1973, had three wonderful sons and now have two wonderful daughters-in-law and four amazing granddaughters.
I specialised in operating theatre work, especially neuro-surgery and worked in that field for over 17 years. The anatomy and physiology training would stand me in good stead when I did my year Health Coaching in 2006.
We ran our own small hotel in Cape Town for 10 years and when we lost that decided to move to the UK in 2005 and are now based in Holland.
I went on to do courses in Nutrition, sports nutrition and did an advanced nutritionist course and now focus on Health, Wellness and Nutrition coaching. I am also an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner and bring that in to make it more holistic. I use a weight loss program based on your genetics using DNA testing. The program has a life-long platform of recipes and exercise where you can add own recipes and it even creates a shopping list based on your meal choices.
